For our fifth tutoring session, PJ and I continued reading Brian’s Return but he found it boring so
we switched books after a few minutes. PJ’s lack of interest in the novel made
it more difficult for him to focus, so things were much better when we switched
books. We started reading I Survived,
a collection of stories about historical disasters from the perspective of a
boy or girl who survived it. We started on a story about the shark attacks of
1916, and it was very entertaining and informative. PJ and I both enjoyed it!
The story focuses on the first major series of shark attacks in U.S. history, which
resulted in 4 people killed and one injured. Several of the shark attacks took
place in a creek, which surprised both of us. I told him that it is very
unusual, but a shark can swim from the ocean into a creek. The book describes
how people did not believe that the first death was from a shark attack. We talked
about why that would be. The study of marine biology was just beginning so people
knew very little about sharks and how dangerous they could be. At that time,
people generally did not swim in deep water so shark attacks were extremely
rare. We also covered some new vocabulary, mostly from the newspaper clippings
in the book- “unavailed” and “crimsoned”.
