Taslima: April 10th
5pm- 6pm Taslima's Place
Regular and irregular verbs/Regular role play
This was my sixth session with Taslima. For this lesson we worked on regular and irregular verbs. First, we covered regular verbs. I asked Taslima to make simple sentences using 10 verbs. I corrected any errors she made in her sentences (these were written sentences). Afterwards, we covered irregular verbs. I found a chart online and told her she would simply `have to memorize these because there were no tricks to learn them, really. We again made sentences with 10 irregular common verbs. I reviewed all the errors with her.
For the remaining portion of the session, we did some roleplaying. This was for speaking practice. We did a role-play where Taslima had to decline an invitation and explain why she could not go. I corrected her errors as we went along. The second was how she would order food at a restaurant and explain to them about the stuff she cannot eat. The third play was how she would make an appointment at the doctors. (This took longer than expected, as Taslima took quite some time brainstorming).
Taslima’s kids are very young but they seem to enjoy taking part in our sessions. They do not understand much of what I say but sometimes they will repeat words that I repeat when correcting Taslima’s mistakes. Surprisingly, the older son is catching onto English pretty good by watching a lot of Youtube videos. I encouraged Taslima to watch more English videos whether it be cooking, educational, or entertainment. We had a discussion about how listening will help her learn more about the speech patterns in the English language.
