Date/Time: April 21, 6:30-8:30pm
Location: Tutee’s home in Sienna Square Apartments
Topic/Skill: Dates and time vocabulary
I met with my child tutee Damarce and her sisters for the
seventh time on Friday. The girls already know how to tell time and the days of the
week, but haven’t been able to answer other important questions I’ve had like
how long they’ve lived in Tallahassee/when they came here. I taught them
vocabulary like how long, yesterday, tomorrow, weekday, before, after, and ago.
I did some good verbal practice of the words with them, and I found
out they came to Tallahassee in November. They explained to me that it takes
them 40 minutes to walk to church on Sundays and they showed me their church’s
program book with pictures of them and the other church members in it. They
also told me that 3 more families that they know from Rwanda are coming
to Tallahassee soon through IRC. I am happy to see that they have found a sense
of community with English-speakers in their church here and will also have a
growing community of people who speak their language and have shared history. I
showed my completed version of the book that I am having them make and gave
them more pages to fill out and color. I had to provide a good bit of support
for this activity or they would get confused or just start copying what I had
written and drawn in my book, which usually wasn’t accurate for them.
Afterwards we did a photoshoot in their kitchen so I could put a picture of
each girl on the front of her book. They were super cute and hilarious and I
got some great pictures. I got a video of them all waving and shouting things
like “Hi!” “I love you!” “How are you feeling?” which they wanted me to send to
my mom. They are big fans of my mom, and she really enjoyed their video. Their
parents insisted that I eat dinner with them after my lesson, which was extremely kind but also a little frustrating because I had somewhere else to be but felt obligated to stay.
