For our third meeting, I invited Fahd over to my apartment
to hang out with me and my roommates. I thought it would be good for him to
meet some other American friends. We all really enjoyed hanging out and talking!
My roommate asked him what they do for fun in Kuwait, and Fahd told us that
they hang out in cafes or each other’s houses. He said Kuwait City is full of
cafes but no nightclubs or bars. As an American, it’s crazy to think about a
country with no bars or nightclubs! Alcohol is so ingrained in many cultures,
but in Kuwait it is forbidden. There must be major culture shock for Muslim
students coming to FSU- the drinking, how people dress (especially girls),
casual dating, among other things. I would like to visit Kuwait someday and
experience Fahd’s culture the way he is experiencing mine. We also talked about
Kuwait’s medical system versus the United States’. In Kuwait, there is
universal health care! This is something that Americans usually associate with
European countries like Denmark and Sweden. But Kuwait is progressive in this
way as well. I’m hoping that Fahd will be available this weekend for brunch
with me and my friends!
