Kim TS #12

I met with my adult tutee, Modibo, on Tuesday April 11 at 12 pm in our usual spot in the CIES building. We started our lesson on the computer looking over vowel and consonant rules. Modibo is very good at reading but does struggle every now and then on the proper pronunciation of new words. I thought it would be a good refresher for him to look over the vowel and consonant agreement rules that Professor Kim went over with us last week in class. Modibo took a couple of notes and the rules seemed to immediately click because when we read our article for the day he didn't mispronounce a single word! I was very proud of him. We read a short article called Saving the Everglades which talked about the environmental protection program that was passed by Congress to help conserve Florida's wetlands. Modibo had never heard of the Everglades so it was a nice subject to discuss now that he will be living in Florida for the next few years. We covered new vocabulary terms which included: heritage, encroach, inhospitable, swamp, scheme, levee, prompt, and strain. This article led into a really wonderful discussion with Modibo about environmental politics and land preservation. It's hard to believe that I only have two more tutoring sessions left with him and then class will be over and he will return home to Africa. Oh, how the time flies!
