Kim TS #8
I met with Amidu, my child tutee, at his home on Tuesday April 6 at 7 pm for his fifth tutoring session. When I arrived he was playing outside with his younger brother and sister. He was riding a skateboard down the sidewalk on his shins and his sisters were sharing a scooter together. I stayed outside with them for about 10 minutes and asked Amidu how his day was. I asked what he was learning about in school and I was able to pull out more from him in those 10 minutes than I have in any meeting over the past 4 weeks. He spoke to me in complete sentences and told me that reading and science were his favorite subjects in school. It was so heartwarming to finally feel like Amidu was comfortable speaking around me, and he revealed to me that he knows far more than he's led me to believe! We made our way inside and started the day's lesson with his older brother, Abu and his two younger siblings. We watched a short video and then reviewed a very comprehensive sheet of various fruits and vegetables. All of the children knew most of the vegetables but were unfamiliar with the English words. The youngest of the bunch that participates is six years old and she kept calling avocados "volcanos," it was almost too cute to correct. I asked the children what their favorite foods were and they were so eager to answer. They even ranked their favorites from 1-5 (1 being their very favorite) but they also just liked pointing to the pictures of the various foods and saying "I like this one...and this one...and this one" and pointing to all of them. I asked what they had for dinner and they told me they had rice with carrots and rabbit, so they have a pretty good grasp on food. It was fun to teach them when one eats breakfast vs lunch vs dinner.
