For our third tutoring
session, PJ and I finished up Hatchet. In the novel, Brian finally retrieves
the survival pack from the plane. It has many useful things in it, such as a
sleeping bag, freeze dried meals, matches, and a first-aid kit. There’s even a survivor
rifle. Brian has mixed feelings about the pack- he’s very happy about the food
and sleeping bag but reluctant to use the rifle and other tools. PJ was a bit
confused by this so we talked about why Brian felt that way- Without the
survival pack, Brian had developed so many skills. He learned how to live in
the wilderness without modern tools. Even though his ordeal was very difficult,
he feels proud and good about these skills, and connected to the wilderness.
The story may have been very different if he had found the survival kit
earlier. At the very end of the book, the author referenced “the secret” once
again. PJ still wasn’t sure what this meant, so we talked about it to make sure
he understood. The secret was related to his mother and another man, so the
author was implying that she had an affair. Brian knew about it but did not
tell his father. From our discussion, it seemed that PJ had good comprehension of
the novel overall!
