April 14th at Taslima’s Place
Difference between Questions, Conversation Questions
This was my 7th session with Taslima. Previously she had asked me to explain the difference between asking questions that start with “Are” vs “Do”. This led me to share many example sentences with her. I modeled a few scenarios where the two are used. We then talked about the differences and usages of “When, How, Which”. I gave a few examples and then Taslima came up with a few question sentences.
For the last part of our session, we did a fun question and answer with the topic of gardening. I found an interesting website that has many conversations topics that can be done with ESL students.
http://iteslj.org/questions/ ---- I chose the topic of gardening. I saw front of Taslima’s apartment that she had a few pots and had even planted a few things. So I thought this would be a fun topic for Taslima to talk about. http://iteslj.org/questions/gardening.html
I asked the questions first and Taslima answered. As she answered I typed errors on my laptop. In some questions I also helped her along when she did not know how to answer. For the new words we came across, Taslima noted it down in her vocabulary notebook. After the whole conversation finished, we reviewed and corrected the errors that she had made. Taslima has gotten very good in using proper verb tenses which makes me feel like I have helped her improve, even if a little.
