Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: TOEFL Q5 & Q6, word stress in English
I met with Ana for the last time on Wednesday. We did a
bunch of practice TOEFL Speaking Questions (5 and 6). I recorded her response
each time and we listened to it together and I gave her feedback. Overall, she
did a good job, and even when there was something in the audio that she didn’t
quite understand, she did a good job speaking about it in a way that didn’t make it
obvious to the listener. For some of the questions, we listened to sample
responses as well, which she found helpful. I sent her some follow-up resources
for more TOEFL Speaking practice and pronunciation practice. I hope all this
practice will make her TOEFL test day less nerve-racking and allow her to get
the score she needs relatively quickly. At the end of the lesson I gave Ana a handout that I found with
explanations about which words are typically stressed in English and a practice
game where she had to pick out sentences from a word search and identify the word
stress pattern in the sentence. I’m really glad that I got to tutor Ana this
session and hope to still meet up with her every now and then as friends!
