Topic/Skill: Grammar (Adjective clauses and Adverbs)
Prior to our last meeting Abdulghaffar expressed a desire to improve his listening skills. I sent him a few videos to watch (a scene from the movie Fight Club, a scene from Seinfeld, and a 5-minute TED Talk), and attached some questions for him to answer after each video. Once we met up again on Wednesday, we reviewed each of the clips and discussed the answers to the questions. He still struggled with the speed of the dialogue in the movie and Seinfeld scenes, but comprehended more from the TED Talk. We then moved on to grammar, particularly adjective clauses and adverbs. We went over the rules of each and some examples directly from his textbook. Once he had a good grasp of each, I wrote some example sentences of my own and had him identify the adjective clause and the adverbs in each sentence. Then, to ensure that he understood those concepts, I had him create example sentences of his own. We did this on the white board, so we were able to correct the mistakes together. He was able to come up with good adjective clauses, but the sentence structure needed improvement. I broke down the grammatical structure of the sentence to show what belonged where, and built on top of what he wrote to show how the sentence would be grammatically correct.
