Topic/Skill: Phonics and Spelling
Christian and I continued to work on phonics and spelling.  His grasp of the alphabet has continually improved each week, but he still struggles to understand the function of each letter in a word.  We worked more on phonics this week in an effort to increase his spelling skills.  I printed out a few coloring worksheets that had him color in shapes with words that were the same sound as a word given in the instructions.  Each shape that was colored in formed a picture that he then had to identify. He was able to accurately identify words with the same initial sounds, but only after pointing out the word myself and asking him what it said.  Even then, I had to say the word out loud for him to guess whether or not it was correct.  Once he got the hang of it, however, he was able to identify more and more words without my help.  I also brought the first couple of pages from Dr. Suess's One Fish, Two Fish.  I read through each word, and had him repeat after me.  I then, asked him to read along with me while keeping track of each word with my pen.  I only went up to the third page because the vocabulary and grammar was too much for him to comprehend.  After reading through it a couple of times, he was able to read a few words when I pointed them out and asked him what they were.
