Taylar TS #7

Date/Time: April 3,  2017; 12-1PM
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: Vocabulary and Reading
Prior to our meeting, I sent Aziz three TOEFL reading passages at the upper-intermediate/advanced level.  One of the things we worked on last meeting was comprehension of a passage based on overall context.  I had him read each passage and highlight which words he did not understand.  We then went through each word he highlighted and tried to find its meaning based on context clues.  Overall, Aziz only identified 5-7 words in each passage and was able to comprehend the entire thing without knowing the meaning of those specific words.  Next, I researched vocabulary words that were associated with sports and business to help him become more familiar with (and interested in) his sports management plans.  Most of the general sports terms he was able to define, but there were still a few that he did not know.  The sports management and general business terms (like intercollegiate for example) were unknown to him.  I included those words to test how much knowledge he had on basic terms in these fields.  He knew about 50% of the words I gave him.  He kept the list of vocabulary terms with the definitions to look over for our next meeting.
