I had my third tutoring session with Modibo on Tuesday April 6. We always meet during the lunch hour in the listening lab in the CIES building. During our meeting he apologized to me for having to cancel our tutoring lesson the week before. He told me he ate shrimp for the first time ever on that Saturday before our scheduled tutoring session and he had a very serve allergic reaction that led him to the hospital. He told me he was feeling much better. We talked about his known allergy to crab and came to the conclusion that he might be allergic to all shellfish. We moved into our lesson and read an article about the Rodeo in the West. While Modibo read aloud, I took notes on all of the words he mispronounced. We went over them one by one and I asked him to read the words back to me. He didn't seem to have as many issues when he read just the word on its own outside of the article. For example, one of the words he mispronounced was nation. While reading he said "nah-shun" but when I pointed it out to him he said "na-tion" and really stressed the "a" sound. Modibo's first language is French so I don't blame him for pronouncing words in English the way they are said in French, especially when the spelling is identical in both languages. I still correct him on his mistakes and he is very appreciative!
