Writing/Vocabulary
This was my 7th session with So Young. For the past sessions, I’ve concentrated a lot on reading and comprehension. But for our last two sessions, I wanted to work with So Young more on her writing. So Young wants to know more low frequency vocabulary words, but does not have the time to memorize them. In my opinion, it’s not easy to make vocabulary activities super fun always.
So I decided to share with So Young a practice I used to do when I was studying for the SATs back in high school. I used to get the list of vocabulary words and look through them twice. Then I would take a group of vocabulary words and use them in writing a story. This helped me greatly to remember the words.
I found these great lists online of low frequency words used often in SAT, GRE preparation. The words are listed with their meaning. So I shared this with So Young. We went through two groups of words, defined them, found what part of speech it could be used in, and gave an example sentence.
Afterwards, I showed her a visual writing prompt. Basically its a series of pictures that will give her an idea about what to write. From the images, she chose the topic: “describe your city as if it were a person.” So Young wrote a writing piece on this topic using at least 5 vocabulary words. After she finished, I proofread the paragraphs with her. So Young tends to have a lot of run-ons so we tackled how this can be solved. We decided to continue doing this type of activity for our last session next time!
