For our fourth tutoring session,
PJ and I read a sequel to Hatchet, Brian’s Return. Back in civilization, Brian
feels out of place and is compelled to return to the wild. PJ wondered why Brian
would want to do that, so I explained that he did not have a specific reason
for going back but rather just a feeling. We discussed why Brian would feel
that way- how his experiences changed him and made him feel different from
other people. He felt out of place among his peers at school. In the novel,
Brian makes friends with a blind man. When Brian described how beautiful the
wilderness was, the man started to cry. PJ was confused by this, so we talked
about why he would cry. Now that the man is blind, he won’t have the
opportunity to see many beautiful sights in the world. This could make someone
feel very sad. But he also gets enjoyment out of Brian’s descriptions because
it makes him feel like he is there. We also went over some new vocabulary but
mostly focused on critical reading of the story.
