This week I had
my fourth session with Kavira, and I do believe my first break-through. During
our session this week Kavira, and her siblings truly engaged with me in English,
and demonstrated just how much they knew and were learning in school. All of the
kids were more communicative and were willing to listen and interact. Last week
I taught Kavira some descriptive words such as “tall,” “short,” “young,” and “old,”
so this week I continued this theme, but also taught Kavira opposites using a fun
children’s video. For example, Kavira learned that “young” was an opposite for “old,”
and also learned many other opposites such as hot/cold, left/right, few/many,
open/closed, day/night, big/small, heavy/light, etc. After we learned some
opposite words, I had Kavira and her siblings play a game of Simon Says. In our
game I would say, “Simon says point to someone tall” or “Simon says point to
someone old.” The kids all loved this game because it was more interactive and
they could describe themselves and their family, such as their grandmother. After we learned about
opposites and descriptive words, Kavira’s brother started singing the head-shoulders-knees-and-toes
song; so I taught Kavira those words and we sang along, too. As we ended our
session I even taught the kids a Knock-Knock Joke:
Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad
you’re not a banana?!
It took the
younger kids a moment to understand the joke, but once they did there was no
shortage of giggles. It is quite rewarding to see Kavira grow in confidence
each week, and watch as more of her siblings join our sessions. I am definitely
learning that because Kavira is quite young I need to find more active
lessons and videos to keep her attention so I will continue to do so.
