Jacqueline TS #6 child

4/8/17 10-11:30 am

This morning I tutored Alex, his brother, Daniel, and his sister Rebecca. It's amazing to me how they are so eager to learn. In comparison with children I've seen who are from the states, most would not desire to willingly learn like these kids do. Their excitement is very encouraging to me.

Today, I used Prof Kim's idea and started with the Head, and Shoulders, Knees, and Toes song. To my surprise, they knew the words! They've only lived in the states for 3-4 months, so I wasn't sure if they would recognize the song. After we sang it together, I drew a big picture of a stick figure, so we could write out the body parts, and they would have a visual. They each drew their own stick figure, copying my example. Some of the words were difficult for them, such as "knees" and "shoulders", which is understandable. I had them sound out the words as best they could and guess the spelling.

After we went thru the body parts from the song, I also went over other parts, like "hands" and "legs". Since some words in the song are singular, and others are plural, we discussed and wrote out both forms of the words. I had them draw a new picture and try to spell the parts out from memory, then went over the concept of adding an "s" to the word to make it plural. (Obviously this doesn't work for every word in the English language, but for this activity, it applied to all the words).

I was so excited that they really seemed to grasp the concept and apply it! I used other examples like "paper and papers", holding up 1, then 2 pieces of paper. After a few more examples of things on the table, I asked them to make other words plural. I would say "1 book, 2 ____?" and they would say, "books"! It felt like a super successful meeting today, and gave me hope for possibly teaching kids in the future :]
