On Monday 27 March, I returned to Andrew’s listening class.
The lecture topic was religion, and as before, the TA began the class with the “word
of the day.” That day’s word was amalgam: a mixture or blend of things. She
asked the students to pronounce the word as a class, before offering a
definition. During the active lesson, students listened to a lecture on
religion, which discussed religion in America, the recent evangelical resurgence,
and minority religions. While listening, students took down notes, and used
them to answer vocab/concept questions in a packet. The lecture was replayed,
giving students time to complete their assignment. After this activity, students
completed a vocabulary quiz on the past week’s words of the day. After the
quiz, a comprehension activity, relevant to the lecture on religion, was given
to students. I learned how to properly organize a listening class using Andrew’s
great example.
