Sabrina TS#10

April 6th- 9AM-10AM
So Young - Skype

This session So Young and I continued to review the vocabulary words we learned during the reading of “The Gift of the Magi”. We did a fill in the blank worksheet to check her vocabulary comprehension. I gave So Young another worksheet regarding these vocabulary words for her writing practice. In this assignment, So Young had to use the vocabulary words to make sentences to describe different things about her. In one question it asked her, “What is an item that has become depreciated but is valuable to you?”
“Depreciated” was the vocabulary word and she had to know the definition of it to answer this question.

After she completed the worksheet, we reviewed it together and corrected all grammar errors. For the later portion of the session, we read an article called, “Is Graffiti art or vandalism?”. This was something I had been reading in preparation for teaching a CEIS class that day for my final project. It had a higher level of vocabulary but I thought So Young was ready for it. Before starting the article, I asked So Young what she knew about graffiti and her thoughts on it. As we read the article, I took pauses and asked her comprehension questions. At the end of the session, we collected a list of vocabulary words that So Young did not understand. We looked through the reading passage and found the vocabulary words again and used context clues to define the words.

This session was very much vocabulary centered but So Young seemed to enjoy learning vocabulary this way than just giving a list and asking for definitions. She also expressed that this article was not that interesting for her so for comprehension it was harder to keep her focus. For our next session, I am planning to find something fun for So Young to read.
