Peter TS # 3
On
Monday 27 March, I met Abdullah, my adult tutee from Kuwait, in the back patio
of the CIES building. I asked him what he would like to use our tutoring
sessions for. He told me that he had recently taken an exam—I can’t remember
the name of it—in which he scored poorly on the speaking assessment, and would
like to improve his speaking skills. We decided that having a conversation once
or twice a week with a native English speaker would help improve his fluency.
We basically got to know each other in this first session. I noticed that he
had great listening skills and spoke fluently; I sometimes had to correct his pronunciation,
and ask him to enunciate his words. We discussed television shows that we liked,
and shared a few in common. He told me of his plans of entering a university in
the U.S. and studying either computer engineering or civil engineering. He is
now leaning towards civil, because he has been told that the civil curriculum
in most engineering departments is the easiest one.
