On 29 March, Raul and I met for a second time at Mr.
Roboto’s on Tennessee St. I asked how his classes were going; he said they were going well. One thing he has done more of is watch movies in English. At first,
Raul said, listening was difficult; but now he binges on Netflix and can’t
watch enough Hollywood films. He used to have to enable the subtitles, but is
comfortable enough now without them. We agreed to go to the movies for our next
meeting.
We talked
about how Americans like sushi. He had ordered a California roll—he’s not used
to eating other kinds of raw fish. He seemed open to trying a different kind
next time he went to a sushi restaurant. I asked him if there were many sushi
restaurants in Columbia; there exist a few, apparently, though he didn’t say if
he had been to any.
