Taylar CO #3

Date/Time: March 28, 2017; 2:00PM
Topic/Skill: Listening
Teacher Presentation: The instructor began the lesson by reviewing the previous lesson with the class. They practiced writing and summarizing and took notes on a dictation.  They listened to the dictation again in today's class and wrote some more notes.  After the dictation, the instructor gave a presentation on "summarizing" and what "summary" meant.  She broke it down and gave a do's and don't's list for the class to see how to summarize the dictation.
Classroom Management: Because of the lower level, the class was heavily instructor-led.  However, there was still a lot of discussion prompted by the instructor and the students were engaged throughout the lesson.  The instructor also had the students work in pairs to review their notes from the dictation.
Materials: Textbook, Computer, Audio Dictation file.
Student Participation: Moderate; the lesson was mainly an instructor-led lesson, but the students were still encouraged to participate.  They worked in pairs to review their notes from the dictation and were very active in the discussion portion of the lesson.
Feedback Provided: Feedback was provided on an individual, one-on-one level.  The instructor reviewed the students summaries individually, while they were doing them and then collected them at the end of class to grade them.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The biggest takeaway I got from this class was the importance of structure in a lower level class. Because the students were in the 1A level, the instructor was providing the most linguistic support in the classroom and initiated most of the discussion and presentation.  Also, something else I found interesting about this particular lesson was the usage of audio dictations featuring different accents.  I was surprised to hear British, german, and Australian english accents in the recording, but I actually think it was much more beneficial for the students to be exposed to those accents early one.
