Since my last few
lessons with Dojun focused not just on listening for comprehension, but
listening for words and concepts, this week I tried to spice it up and had
Dojun listen to music. I had Dojun listen to “Piano Man” and “Don’t Stop
Believin’” and fill in missing words or phrases from the song lyrics I gave
him. I made sure to pick certain words and phrases such as “gin and tonic” that
may have been less familiar to Dojun. After listening I had Dojun read his
complete lyrics to me, and tell me what the song was about. When I asked Dojun if
he had heard these songs before I told me that “Piano Man “ is a very popular
song in South Korea, but that before now he had never really focused on the
lyrics or their meaning before. After going through our songs I had Dojun watch
a clip from the television show Friends where Ross finds his “sound” playing
keyboard. As per usual, Dojun was supposed to tell me in his own words what
happened an answer a key listening question such as what animal noises are
played during Ross’ sound.
