Today was my final
Skype session with Dojun and it was a bit sad, he has been an excellent student
and a privilege to teach. So, with this in mind I decided to fill our final
lesson with one of every exercise I have used with Dojun over the past few
weeks. I started our session by having Dojun watch a video describing the US
Government’s system of checks and balances. Dojun then answered a few
comprehension questions, which he got completely correct. After our video
segment I then had Dojun listen to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and, much like
last week, fill in missing lyrics. Dojun told me that much like “Piano Man”
from last week this song was also popular in South Korea, but that he had not
heard the version I had shared with him by the Hawaiian artist Israel Kamakawiwoʻole.
After the song I had Dojun watch his final Friends clip in which the gang plays
a game in which they have to list all 50 states. As usual, I had Dojun tell me
what happens in his own words and answer an active listening question. Dojun
asked me if I could name all 50 states and I, quite honestly, told him that the
one time I tried to list the states with a friend much like in the video, I
missed two states: Iowa and Idaho. I then asked Dojun how many states he could
list and he got to 10, but I argued we should discount two because he used both
Iowa and Idaho. With Dojun I have learned a lot about how equally important
content and topic is when it comes to listening activities in English learning.
It has been great fun to work with Dojun, and I hope that I have many more
students like him in the future.
