Peter TS #11

On Wednesday 3 May, Raul came to my apartment again to be tutored. We began work on gerunds and infinitives. A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun, and it occupies some positions in a sentence that a noun ordinarily would, for example: subject, direct object, subject complement, and object of preposition. An infinitive is a verbal consisting of the word to plus a verb (in its simplest form) and functioning as a noun, adjective, or adverb. I showed Raul an example of a sentence with an infinitive: She wanted to go. I had him make up his own sentences. An example using a gerund would be: Her favorite activity is sleeping. I pointed out the difference between these two kinds of sentences, and had him come up with his own. He then rewrote the sentences he came up using either gerunds or infinitives, depending on the original sentence.
