Tutoring Session #14 (child) with PJ
Date/Time:
04/19/17, 7:30-8:15pm
Location:
Professor Kim's House
Topic/Skill:
Reading comprehension
For this session, PJ and I continued reading his 'I Survived...' book.
This section of the book was about a historic volcanic eruption in south east Asia that had severe local, regional, and global implications. PJ and I took turns reading about every page or so. While reading PJ would often want to debate certain minor thematic elements of the book or concepts tangentially related such as "whats more powerful a volcanic explosion or a nuclear explosion" to which he insisted "nuclear explosion" after I said I wasn't sure. As we went along I asked PJ comprehension questions about vocabulary that we had read which he seemed to grasp fairly well. When we came to the end of the chapter though PJ was unable to correctly answer fairly basic comprehension questions regarding the general thrust of the information provided. The main theme of the chapter was the local, regional, and global effects of the eruption but PJ seemed to have missed that entirely. I told him to reread the chapter with the intent of paying attention to the main theme.
