Since our last session
topic was a bit on the heavier side this week with Dojun I decided to choose a
topic that could tell him a bit about what was happening in his brain as he
learned English. Our listening activity this week centered on the topic of the
bilingual brain and the different theories surrounding second language
learning. Like our last session this week I did not provide a vocabulary list.
During our first few sessions, when I did provide vocabulary, I noticed that
Dojun knew more of the words than expected, but also that he could reasonably guess
an unfamiliar word’s meaning fairly well. As such, this is what Dojun did this
week, and he did really well, with the majority of his unfamiliar words being
medical such as “prefrontal” and “synapses.”
After the video and vocabulary review Dojun answered some comprehension
questions and, again, did really well. After this segment on language learning
I had Dojun watch a brief clip from the television show, Friends, in which
Phoebe tries to teach Joey French. After watching the clip Dojun was to explain
to me what was happening in the scene and answer a few of my active listening
questions such as, “What was Joey actually saying when he repeated after
Phoebe?”
