For our third session, Dojun and I continued reading the
book Holes. In the chapter, the main
character Stanley is introduced to some characters with interesting nicknames
(X-ray, Armpit, etc.) so we talked about the names. Some of the names are
pretty unflattering (Armpit, Barfbag), but the boys use them to show
respect/affection for each other. One man is called “Mr. Sir” which I told
Dojun doesn’t make sense (I figured he was confused by it). We talked about how
both “Mr.” and “Sir” are terms of respect, so maybe that’s why he prefers Mr.
Sir. I read the whole chapter and then reread a few key passages before
checking Dojun’s comprehension. He was able to understand the main ideas of the
conversation between Stanley and his counselor Mr. Pendanski- that Pendanski
told Stanley it was pointless to run away because he’ll die in the desert.
Dojun told me that our tutoring sessions have been very helpful for him, and I may continue tutoring him over summer as well!
