Chloe TS #7 (child)

For our seventh tutoring session, PJ and I read another I Survived chapter. This one was about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. PJ is always very curious about the disasters and how they happened, so we talked about how the fire started. To check his comprehension, I asked PJ to tell me why the fire was so bad, how did it happen? For example, the story mentioned that most of the buildings in Chicago at that time were made of wood. Even the sidewalks and roads were made of wood. Other causes of the fire were drought (I explained to him this means no rain) and strong winds. He was able to list most of these details from the story. We also talked about firefighters- They probably had less resources than firefighters do now. They did not reach the fire quickly enough (in horse-drawn steam engines) and their water hoses weren’t as efficient. Overall PJ had very good comprehension of the story!
