For our sixth tutoring session, PJ and I continued reading I Survived (We tried Brian’s Return again, but it didn’t work
out). We read a story about the Hindenburg disaster of 1937, and PJ and I both
learned a lot. The I Survived series
is great for PJ because it’s very exciting as well as historically accurate and
educational. In the story, Hugo and his family are traveling back to New York
City because his sister contracted malaria in Kenya, so we talked about
malaria, how you contract it (mosquitos), and why it’s a dangerous disease- in
1937, they had just developed medicine to treat it. We also talked about the concept
of an airship and why it could malfunction. There were Nazi officers on the
airship, and PJ was very curious about this. The story mentioned their swastikas,
so I explained to him that they used arm patches to identify themselves as
Nazis, as well as star of David patches to identify Jewish people, etc. Hugo
was scared of them in the story so PJ wanted to know if they were bad (I told
him that they hurt a lot of people).
