One of the perks of working with an adult tutee is
that you can tackle more difficult or worldly subjects, such is the case with
Dojun. From my very first session with Dojun, when we discussed what his
favorite topics were and what he was most interested in learning, he has always
had a desire to learn more about the United States. So, this week, with Dojun’s
permission, I decided to tackle the topic of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
This is a topic extremely important to American history, and continues to be
entirely relevant to this day. I found a TED Ed video that covered the history
of the trade and had Dojun watch it. Unlike our past few sessions where I gave
Dojun vocabulary, this time I had Dojun listen both for unfamiliar words and
comprehension. Dojun has a far greater knowledge of English than he thinks so I
wanted him to realize that while he may not know the word, through context
clues he will more than likely be able to discern its meaning much like native
speakers would. As expected, while Dojun did not understand a few words like “sanitation”
or “descendants,” after we reexamined their context and looked at the roots,
prefixes, or suffixes Dojun managed to guess their meanings pretty accurately.
