This week Kavira’s older sister, who usually wrangles her and her siblings, was extremely sick so instead of launching into a new lesson I decided to do a review of our past few sessions. I began the session with a few kid’s ESL videos that used a great deal of songs to help kids memorize the topics. Kavira and I reviewed descriptive words, colors, shapes, and animals. I would show Kavira a picture of an animal, have her name the animal, and then describe the animal; for example, I showed Kavira a picture of a small brown spotted dog and she then told me about it. When Kavira puts her mind to her lessons she is a rather engaged student, and certainly knows more than she lets on, but, if anything, my lessons with Kavira have taught me the great value of patience when teaching English to younger children and I will only continue to build on my patience and technique when working with Kavira.
