Chloe TS #1 (child)

My first TS was an observation of PJ’s tutoring session with another TEFL student. She helped him with his science homework. The topic was weather, specifically the climate in different countries. First she had PJ read everything out loud, and then she asked him what the question was asking for. Overall, she encouraged him to pay attention to the details and not skip over anything. They often used the process of elimination to find the answer, which I think is a good strategy. The tutor prompted him without doing his work for him. She asked questions that led him to the answer, for instance “Argentina is close to the Equator but it’s a very long country, so what do you think the weather is like near the top of Argentina? What about the bottom?” This is conducive to helping your tutee develop their own problem-solving and critical thinking skills- like Prof Kim says, teach them how to fish rather than give them the fish. She also made sure that he understood why the correct answer was correct. I was able to pick up some good tutoring skills from the observation.
