Sabrina TS#3

Date: March 13th
My place at 10AM morning

My second tutoring session with Taslima began with a review of words she wasn't able to understand when watching a short youtube video. She had chosen the words: “prohibit”, “requires”, “specifically”, and “include”. In very basic, simple words I defined for her the words giving a lot of example sentences. She was able to understand me when I said phrases like, “to add”— (for the word include), “need”— (for requires), and similarly. I had the hardest time explaining the word, “specifically”. I looked up on google to see if I could find any image to help demonstrate this word’s meaning. But it wasn’t easy. I showed her a image of a batch of red apples with one green one. I used the words: different, detail, and special. At the end she got the gist, but I don’t feel she understood fully. I then asked her to say a short sentence using the words we just learned. Taslima mastered this quite well! Even though her sentence structure was not fully accurate, the context in which she used was appropriate. I honestly think the words were too complex for her level and we need to concentrate on more beginner level words. For the next part of our lesson, I showed her this image:

I thought the words here were very beginner friendly and usable for simple sentences. I also loved how there was an image to illustrate. Taslima also found this helpful. We went through a few words that Taslima already knew and I asked her to talk about her daily routine using the words. All the words in the image are in present simple form and when Taslima began speaking she became concerned on using the right verb tense. I told her to just speak and not worry about that. After she discussed her day, I then introduced to her the form of present simple and defined when a present simple is used. I then went over the errors she made earlier. We did more example sentences. I gave her a worksheet found online on present simple and we went through all the exercises. I asked her to look over this image and learn the other words she doesn’t know. The words in this image are very basic and I feel knowing them will enhance her vocabulary and confidence to speak. Even though I threw in the present simple tense in this session, I think I want to help Taslima build her vocabulary more. I feel like the more words she learns, the better she will become in speaking. She can work on fixing the grammar parts later. So for the next lessons, I think we will do more on building everyday vocabulary and using them in conversation.
