I attended Felicia Ciapetta's Monday
reading class for beginners. The topic of the class was how to
comprehend and summarize what students read. Over the weekend,
students had homework to read an article called, “Colors”. The
class began with the instructor going straight into discussion about
the article. What had they learned about colors? Students then
revised a strategy taught to them known as “SQ3R”. This stands
for “survey, question, read, recite, and review”. Felicia focused
on explaining the SQ3R method in full detail providing many
examples. She drew figures on the board trying to demonstrate the
difference between the three “R”s in the strategy and how they
would help students in successful comprehension. I loved how she gave
real life examples of how these steps could be applied in other
scenarios of life. She also emphasized the importance of mastering
reading comprehension in these smaller articles before students go on
to tackle far larger articles in future higher studies. Midway in the
class, a writing assignment was given to summarize the article
“Colors”. Another article was introduced end of class. Felicia
asked students to discuss what they thought the article would be
about just from reading the title. It was very interesting to see
everyone's guesses. I really enjoyed how eager the students were to
share their thoughts on what they had read. I credit this to
Felicia's positive attitude in class and her very encouraging
feedback. She made each student's point seem important and in return
students felt motivated to engage in further discussion. She urged
her students to not fear trying. I realized by observing her class
that making students feel comfortable makes them willing to engage.
This is a huge part of their learning development.
