Ryler CO #2

Date/Time:
Wednesday 03/08/17 11:00-11:50

Topic/Skill:
Reading, Level 1A

Teacher Presentation:
Ramin has a very good rapport with his class. He is friendly and warm. He speaks slowly and clearly, especially so since this is a level 1A class. He uses dynamic body language when explaining things to the class.

Classroom Management:
This was a relatively large class compared to others I have seen at CIES, 12 people. Ramin took attendance, went over the agenda for the day's lesson, discussed homework assignments (a Reading Log handout). He then went into the reading lesson of the day (Reading a very short book adaptation of 'Pirates of the Caribbean') and ended with a review of vocabulary and an announcement about the upcoming vocabulary quiz.

Materials:
A small book adaptation of 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The overhead projector connected to a computer and a dry erase board were used by the instructor.

Student Participation:
The students in the class were mostly attentative and egnaged in the lesson but it was clear that as beginners many of them were missing some of what was said by the instructor though he made every effort to use clear and simple communication. The more advanced students were willing and able to respond to questions about the reading while the students who were having difficulties were more reticent.

Feedback Provided:
Ramin was very good about providing students with continuous positive reinforcement while still correcting any mistakes his students made.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned:
Confidence in an instructor is a very good asset to have and it helps to not only keep students attention but also seems to make them more inspired by the lesson. It is slow going with adult beginners so going slow is necessary. Asking follow up comprehension questions and keeping a list of new vocabulary are both crucial.
