Tonight I tutored Alex, a 9-yr old from the Congo. He was very sweet and eager to learn. Very different compared to kids here in the US. There were about 10 kids total at the apt, and at least 3 kids at the kitchen table with us during our session. I found a worksheet on prepositions online, so we used that as a guide and focused mainly on "in front of, inside of, on top of, under, in between". He was able to recognize letters, but when I would ask what letter made an r-sound, he wouldn't always know. I'm thinking we'll focus on phonetics next time. I had him write out different prepositional phrases, draw pictures with the corresponding words/phrases, and use my jacket as a prop to practice putting an arm inside the jacket, etc. I left some sticky notes with the main phrases we used, so he could practice on his own. Time went by faster than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Although I felt inadequate about being an influential teacher, I can tell he is thankful and excited to learn English. I need to show up and try my best, just like Alex.
