I met with my child tutee,
Amidu, for the first time on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. Amidu is from Uganda and
lives with his mother, father, and 4 siblings. During my tutoring lesson with
Amidu, I had all five children watching my instruction and participating. Amidu
is 10 years old and is very sweet and shy. He knew the alphabet, how to
write his name, and we worked together on practicing colors. I gathered a few
of his toys and we practiced counting with them and identifying the colors
found in the various toys. Towards the end of the lesson all five children gathered
around the screen of my iPhone and we watched the first episode of the Muzzy in Gondoland video series
together. The children giggled at the video and I asked Amidu if he liked it to
which he quietly replied “yes.” Tutoring him is going be difficult but I am
looking forward to helping him feel more confident in speaking English. With
his siblings just as interested in my lesson, I look forward to helping them
all improve their English over the next 7 weeks.
This is SUCH an encouraging story! I am tutoring in the morning for the first time ever, and it's a little daunting to me. Thanks for posting your positive experience, Kim!
