I met with my adult tutee,
Modibo, for the first time during the lunch hour on Tuesday March 7. Modibo is
from Mali and moved to Tallahassee in January with his three sisters. We talked about our mutual love for traveling, our hometowns,
food, and culture. I was impressed by Modibo’s English level and was happy to
talk with him about his motivation for improving his English. Modibo is
studying English because he wants to be able to communicate with local native
speakers and feel prepared for a career in engineering. He told me he wants
to expand his vocabulary and be able to talk “fluently and with less of an
accent.” I didn’t find his French accent too heavy and actually understood
everything he said very clearly. He only made a few grammatical errors while we
were talking but he corrected himself immediately before I could say something.
Modibo has asked for my help with reading, learning new vocabulary, and improving
comprehension. He told me he read the young adult novel Treasure Island last
year and said it fit his skill level but he didn’t care much for the story. I
will have to do some research to find some suitable reading material for him.
All in all, I am looking forward to tutoring him!
