On
Monday March 6, I observed Ramin’s 1A Reading class. The day’s activity
included an individual reading assignment that had students read a
newsletter about St Patrick’s Day that was written by a CIES faculty member.
The instructor defined several words from the newsletter that students were
having trouble with. These new words were then added to the week’s list of
vocabulary terms to be tested on later in the week. The classroom had a very
positive energy and Ramin enjoyed making jokes with the students. Students
actively participated in class and asked Ramin lots of questions about the reading
material. The students seemed eager to learn and improve their English reading
skills. Ramin continuously offered positive reinforcement to the students when
they answered something correctly or fully grasped a new idea. I learned that it is important to
keep things light and fun in the classroom. Humor is universal and students wanted to
participate because the content of the lesson was enjoyable and interested
them.
